EASTBOURNE PIER SCULPTURE

Public Art sculpture that ‘captures the moment’ to reflect on Eastbourne’s pier fire.

Looking up at the sky from a typical English beach seafront, it isn’t long before seagulls appear gliding and squawking in on the sea breeze. They are symbols of freedom, opportunity and survival.

I have always been interested in line and space. ‘Gulls’ is a series of sculptures that will utilise materials retrieved from the area of the pier devastated in the 2014 fire.

The seagull silhouettes will contain recovered steel rods and supports of varying lengths and widths to replicate the linear structure of the former domed roof. These flat reclaimed sculptures capture glimpses of the sea through their framework, encouraging viewers to look at and through the work.

Positioned as a group, ‘Gulls’ captures a moment that is ever moving and changing, a depiction of fleeting events.
